I think youre referring to "libero" and not "barrel" in indoor 6s.

The libero is a backrow specialist that cannot serve or jump spike. Their main job is to dig and pass in the backrow.

I think your talking about the librero! The librero is the defensive specialists! They dig all backrow but cant serve! They sub in and out whenever they want but they cant play front row! Its actually a very fun position but confusing at times.
