Looking 4 softball tourney's?

Redshirt is a term used in American college athletics. Typically, a student-athlete has four years of eligibility in a given sport, to coincide with the standard four-year calendar for obtaining a bachelor's degree. For various reasons (see below) some student-athletes opt to not compete with the team for their first year attending a university, but to only attend classes and practices with the team; this process is known as redshirting. The student-athlete will not use one of his or her four years of eligibility in that season. Using this mechanism, a student-athlete has up to five academic years to use the four years of eligibility. However, each student-athlete has at most four years of actual competition with the varsity team.

Anyone going to the Volleyball complex tourney at Greensboro tomarrow?

It's sitting out for a period of time to learn from watching and studying from experience. It's prevalent in college athletics as a means for a coach to avoid playing an athlete straight out of high school. The NCAA also grants medical redshirts for when a player injures him/her self and can't play the rest of a season so they can maintain their full 4 year eligibility. It's used in all sports, not just volleyball.

Any volleyball leagues/pick-up in Pittsburgh, PA and surrounding suburbs?

This is a term used for University when a player can use their first year of eligibility for training purposes. This is negotiated by the NCAA (although I think it is used at all levels). The redshirt year can ONLY be the first year of eligibility, however, if you say, tear your ACL or have a really major injury you can apply for a 'medical redshirt'. This must be approved, and if you have already played in too many games if the season has started it can be denied.

If this is something you're facing, I think that a redshirt year is an excellent way to get great coaching and free education for a year while you up your skills...however it also puts you on the 5 year plan. Good lucK!
