How to catch a tuna?
Answers:
Get on an overnight party boat running out of San Diego between July and September. Most years the albacore are around; in warmer years there are yellowfin tuna, and there are always chances of bluefin or bigeye tuna. Or get on a multi-day trip running down the Baja coast between June and December or so. There are albacore taken all along the Pacific coast (as far north as Washington) in the late summer and early fall, but the farther south the better your chances. Check the reports so you'll know when the fish are biting. http://www.976tuna.com/e107_plugins/land... and http://www.sportfishingreport.com/... have this info.
The local (one-day range) fish range from 10 to 30 pounds or so on the average, though some years schools of bluefin to over 200 pounds appear. The boats head offshore and spend the day looking for fish, by trolling as well as eyeballing, looking for floating kelp paddies, feeding birds, and the like. When a fish is hooked trolling, or the boat stops on a spot of fish, the passengers cast out live bait (generally sardines or anchovies), or occasionally heavy casting jigs.
In general, these boats carry from 10 to 30 passengers, and when the fish are biting, it's not unusual to return to the dock with limits (5 per person in Mexican waters) of the target species.
When the fish are at the surface, you just tie a hook to the end of the line and cast with the weight of the bait; when the fish are deeper you might fish with as much as 3-4 ounces of lead to get the bait down to where the fish are.
In general, you'll want a 30-pound class outfit capable of casting a sardine 20-30 feet off the boat, though if bigger fish are likely, you'll want heavier gear. The landings rent out appropriate gear, which is better than shelling out $200 or so for tackle for a one-time thing. Make sure your drag is set correctly -- tuna are strong fish and can easily run 100 yards of line out. Ask the crew for help if you need it.
