I think you would have to say that Kelly Slater is the best contest surfer in the world. But that doesn't necessarily make him the best surfer in the world. Guys like Andy Irons and Taylor Knox have done some amazing things on surf boards. Ken Bradshaw have been pushing the envelope of extreme surfing for years. Guys like Phil Edwards and Robert August revolutionized the sport in their days.

So the question of who is the best surfer is really as subjective as surfing itself.
