How dangerous is surfing?

i want to learn to surf in Newquay in cornwall in the summer, but i was wandering how dangerous surfing is, and are there any sharks in Newquay?!

Answers:

Which do you like to do better... kayak or canoe?

Been to Newquay lots of times...When you go to Fistral beach, there are hundreds of surf dudes/dudettes in the water, so, there are no sharks to worry about. The surf school really looks after you.

PS. Off there for Easter. hee hee hee...cant wait...

Enjoy jourself, and good luck on the board...xx

Summer's here n i'm kindda interested learning how to skimboard..any1 knw where i can inquire (mla area)?

Surfing is not very dangerous at all but people have died doing it, even professionals, when the waves have been big and heavy such as Pipeline in Hawaii, Teahupoo in Tahiti or Mavericks in California. I don't know the waves you would encounter in Cornwall but I would suggest they are very tame in comparison to these breaks and as long as you can swim you would be in no danger of drowning or being hurt surfing.

Jet Ski or ATV ?

there are sharks in the waters around the britsh isles, but not the type that attack surfers (i surf in ireland all the time). i've been surfing for over ten years and have never even seen a fish of any kind much less a shark.
surfing isn't much more dangerous than crossing the road to get to the beach. get lessons and you'll learn the dangers as well as how to surf.

currents that carry you out into the ocean no matter how hard you paddle to get back, rivermouths where sharks are feeding, waves so big they snap your board and push you underwater for a long time. Surfing can be very dangerous.

Where can I try kite surfing in the Central Europe??

You are more likely to get hit on the head by your own or someone elses surfboard than being eaten by a shark. So beware of other surfers.
