How do you get local surfers to let you surf their spots?

Answers:

What would be the best type of starter outfit for a novice getting into fly fishing.?

The days of "real" localism are pretty much over. Too many lawsuits and too many video cameras.

The fact is, if you want to get local surfers to "let" you surf their spot, you just need to paddle out and do it. There really isn't any right way to do it.

You will need fairly thick skin at first though, as you might get barked at, burned a lot, or just see a lot of stink-eye.

The absolute key though is CONSISTENCY. Here's why:

No one - not even the grumpiest local - likes to yell at people or hassle kooks ALL the time. Nor do the other regulars (notice that I didn't say "locals") like it when their buddy is hassling with someone. It messes up the whole vibe in the water for everyone.

Which basically means if they start to recognize your face and realize that you're not going away, you're in. No more hassles. No one is going to hassle someone who surfs their same break every day. Who the hell wants that kind of headache day in and day out?

And see, that's the whole dynamic. 80% of the guys out at any given "localized" spot are not locals in the true sense. They might be transplants. They might even live in a nearby town and drive there every single day. What they are, are REGULARS.

And as soon as you become a regular, you're in. They might not high-five you in the water, but there sure as hell won't hassle you. They'll be too busy hassling the guy they've never seen before and trying to get him to leave...and never come back.

You with me? So paddle out already. Then do it again. And again. And again.

How do I learn to White Water Kyack around Northern Viginia on the Potomac?

You basically become a "probate", meaning, your a butt kisser, hanger-arounder nice guy and have skills to match, and they will ease up on you. Show them any attitude whatsoever and they will dog you to death.

My friend and i are going white water rafting & she doenst kno how to swim does it matter??

pay them for the spot or simply just b nice

What is better fishing or hunting?

Be respectful. Don't be like the first guy who answered. When you paddle out, surf on the inside for a little while. Get used to the spot. The worst thing to do is to snake someone then fall off and waste the wave. That'll really piss people off.
Once you're "warmed" up, paddle to the main break and wait your turn. Priority goes to the person closest to the breaking part of the wave. Wait in one spot and try not to chase all the waves, looking for the best set. Be willing to let the better waves in the set through to others. Once the locals see that you're respectful and not kook, they'll show you some respect.

Why I could not roll with my paddle, but I can do it on the side of the pool and a paddle with an air bag?

Bogey-the-Man said it totally right!

Be cool. Don't try to snake other people out of the "line-up". Don't paddle for every "set" wave that comes near you. Be humble but don't "***-kiss". Eventually, you will catch a wave; make sure to "rip" it up. If you are a talented surfer in NO time you will receive the respect and WAVES you deserve.

When I was growing up, if you were a "snake" or a "kook" at "The Pier"(local break where I lived), you got your *** kicked or you were never allowed a wave,( dudes would just drop-in on you on purpose). I saw many "townies" car's get there tires slashed or WORSE!

Don't be a snake!
