There are some very good surfers from Brazil. However, as travelers, they have a reputation for having being assholes with a lack of respect. I found this stereotype to be true when I was at Santa Catalina Panama. I was surfing a peak near the "main peak" there all alone. I had been in that town for a few weeks and made a lot of friends, and was traveling alone. Four Brazilians paddled out from a stupid spot, and made it clear that they had just rolled into town. They paddled straight to the small peak I was surfing, which was closer than the main peak, and they proceeded to back-paddle and drop-in on me without ever saying anything to me. Completely disrespectful.
Don't ask "are we jerks?" Just be different from them and create a new stereotype. Just know that many people consider Brazilians to be the least respectful surfers in the unniverse.
