How big an engine would i need on a 14ft boat to pull a wakeboarder along behind it?

Looking for boating life jackets?

you will need at least 50hp to have any amount of fun. If you have more than one person in the boat and you prob. should have a spotter then I would get at least an 85hp engine.

Cross the ocean in a yacht?

Wow a 100hp engine on a14ft boat - that's a lot Jenna.

You would probably get off with a 25hp but performance would be limited. We use 25hp at our sailing club to tow boats in that weigh (with crew) up to 300kg. So they should be able to tow a wakeboarder weighing 80kg.

Is it a law to wear a 'Life Jacket' to go kayaking along the ocean's coast in Santa Monica, CA?

Afternoon

I have a 14ft plancraft stingray ski boat and she has an 80hp 2stroke engine on the rear which will merrily pull an 11 stone bloke out of the water. We have about 30kg of lead and water in the boat too to provide a better wake and allways have a spotter as well as the driver onboard.

As its the torque or pickup that determines whether you will be able to tow a wakeboard, it depends upon the pitch of the prop too, we are running a 19in forwards pitch prop, and could probably put a 21 on withouth it struggling to get me out the water.

I think 100HP will probably be a bit too much as our hull is only rated to 85 horses, any more than that and she may either slide under too much torque when cornering, or the weight distribution may upset her a bit. It is an old engine though, so she may have lost a few of those ponies due to wear and a couple of ineficient jets in the carb.

Incidentally, if its only 14ft you will have problems fitting a tower as most tower manufacturers design them for something bigger. Ive been searching for a tower for ages, well at least for one that costs less than a grand...

Anyway, good luck with it all, best thing to do is contact the hull manufacturer and find out what the hull is rated for and get something towards the top end of that. Should be allright with sixty and above so long as you stay off the pies...
