To get a permit for a private trip (one your own, with no outfitter), it takes about 10 or 15 years due to the volume of people applying. The best way (pretty expensive, unfortunately) is to contact an outfitter and book a trip with one of them. Just google something like "rafting the grand canyon" and you will get plenty of sites.

We have a private trip permit probably in 2010, so I'm holding out, but I've been told that the guided trips are pretty fun, too!
