"Test" is the force which the line is guaranteed NOT to break at. So if you have 20 pound test line, it will hold at least 20 pounds of force. In practice, "test" lines are about 20-40% stronger than the given number, so 20 pound test line will generally stand 24-28 pounds of force before breaking (depending on the manufacturer).There is also "class" fishing line -- this is line which is guaranteed not to test out to more than the rated strength. This is used for tournaments and determining line class records, where the actual strength of the line (not its advertised "test") is used. (The records are kept in metric, so the 20 pound "class" is actually 10 kg, or about 22 pounds.) So 20 pound class line is guaranteed to break at less than 22 pounds of force. (It's generally more expensive, because the manufacturer wants to get it as close to the limit as possible, without going over.) Most fishermen don't bother with the stuff.
Generally if you catch a record sized fish on plain old 20 pound "test" line, the line will test out at more than 22 pounds, and your fish will be considered for the 30 pound "class" (that being the next higher class.)

not too sure, if you mean line test or not cause i have never heard of test line. Line test is the amount of strain a particular diameter of fishing line can hold. 10lb/12/lb/20/lbbut that doesnt mean you cant land a 20lb fish on 10lb line, it all depends on how you fight the fish.
