Where is the best surf spot in Auckland? How long is the drive?

I'm going to hayling Island for the 505 race meet in July, what things are there to do and I need a good pub?!

Mangawhai on the East Coast is great when it's on. If you get the right swell it's one of the best surfs you'll get up this way. It's about an hour and a half drive in summer - plenty of Aucklanders hit the road when it's hot - and a bit less in winter.

Piha and Muriwai are obvious choices if you're looking for a big powerful wave. This isn't a place for beginners unless you're with a good group of people who can help you out if you get into trouble. Piha's only about 45 minutes away from the city on a good day. Again summer means heaps of cars on the road and that means a good old wait in traffic.
