Why do conditions for surfing vary by season?
For example, in Perth, Western Australia, where I live, the surfing is much better in the winter, than it is in the summer. I assume this has something to do with the tilt of the globe, but I don't really understand the effect this might have on the size of the waves.

How far is the closest surf spot in NYC and how far is it by subway?
The weather is determined by the heating and cooling of different areas of earth. If it is winter in the northern hemisphere, it is summer in the southern hemishere, basically because of amount of exposure each hemisphere gets to the sun. This will cause different weather conditions in different areas. For example, in Hawaii, the surf is good on the South Shore, but flat on the North Shore in the summer. In the winter conditions are reversed. Hawaii being in the northern hemisphere but relatively close to the equator gets its southern summer swells from winter storms generated near New Zealand in the Southern hemisphere. During the winter, the northern swells are generated by winter storms in the North Pacific.
