Surfing- I don't understand the whole on-shore off-shore winds thing. Which is better?

I'm going to be in Sitka for 1 day and can I hire a boat to go salmon fishing?
On shore winds means the wind is blowing from the ocean towards the land, coming at you if you are facing the ocean. Off shore means the wind is blowing towards the ocean. Light off shore is best for surfing because it helps smooth the ocean surface. No wind is actually best for creating glassy conditions. Off shore winds also help with the shape of the wave. As the wave crests, off shore winds help hold the peak up a moment longer giving up a steeper face. What should I use to clean mildew from boat seats?
Not sure, I'm taking a surfing lesson on Sunday, If I remember, I'll ask for you and post itHas any 1 been white water rafting?
Assuming there is a decent swell there are two factors which effect the surf- these are the state of the tide (rising/faling/high/low) and the wind. Different spots will work with different tides according to the sea bed so one cannot say a 'best' general tide condition. With regards to the wind, however, there is a spefific 'best' wind- and that is gentle (5-10kts) offshore. The offshore wind has the effect of making the waves very clean- i.e. smooth. If the wind is too strong offshore the surf is extremely clean but it can become difficult to paddle onto the waves. Onshore winds result in rough & stormy seas which aren't much fun at all. In my opinion a very strong offshore wind is preferable to any kind of onshore. Hope this has been helpful to you! Happy surfing!More Questions & Answers...
