I want to build a sea kayak that I can surf some gentle waves, as well as explore some rivers. suggestions?

Where do you live? What types of waves do you want to ride? What surfboard do you ride? Do you mind surfing with a lot of people? Do you only want to surf alone? Do you mind paying to park? Do you mind walking a good distance for surf? What type of ocean bottom do you want to surf over?

...There's just a lot of factors that you can choose from to find a spot that's right for you.

I'm assuming you're newer to surfing. You probably want a longboard, want to surf smaller, slower waves, not too crowded, sandy bottom?

That's generally the route beginners go. If you're more experienced you can figure out what waves you like better find a spot you like. With a shorter board you can surf faster breaking waves better. If you like longboarding, you might like slower waves better to be able to noseride, or just glide along.

In order to answer your question in more detail, I need to know where you live. But below I posted a link to a surf spots map for the US. You can click down to get real specific. If you're not in the US, click for another country.

Example for Orange County. I usually surf a short board. I like to go to Trestles because it's a really consistent wave and it's not too slow so I can actually catch the waves.

But if I wanted to surf small, slow waves, I would to to Doheny or San Onofre.

Knee boarding..behind a boat?

When I was in college a couple of years ago I used to surf off of Campus Point, the break near the Goleta Pier. Real crowded. The wave starts strong with a good wall and slows as it breaks. Now I surf the Topanga beach a lot, it has a long building swell so it's pretty easy to drop into. If you're in Cali. though you have to hit Malibu. That's like the surfer's right of passage.
If you are a beginner, take the above advice and start with a long board.

What do you do when you want to quit but then dont?

Hay mate I live in South Africa Best places I have ever surfed is Jeffreys bay Easter Cape, Victoria bay, buffles bay, plett, still bay, toilets gaansbay, bayview hermanus, kokarot just like the box in aus, petty's bay, kalkbay cape town, hey man loads of spots just got to get in car and drive and something will be working.
