It depends on what type of surfing you want to do and what level of surfer you are. If you're an advance surfer, you'll be able to ride a smaller board. Also, if you want to rip or make more turns, you should go with a smaller board. Typically for someone bigger, a fish is the way to go because they're wider and thicker. 9 Fish Surfboards (www.9fishsurf.com) makes a sick line of boards up to 8'4" in size. You'll definitely be able to ride the 8'4" and may even want to go smaller.
