Going to Tahoe alone for First Time, going to attempt to Snowboard for First time, advice?

I'm going to the Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe by myself, flying from the Bay Area. I'm 23 years old. I was at Heavenly last year but didn't do anything because my company didn't want to have fun. Could anyone that knows anything about this Resort or area give me advice as to where I should go, what to look out for, should I take the Lift up the Gondola? Can I board withouth lessons, etc? Thanks.

Will burton snowboard binding work with any snowboard?

GET A LESSON.

annoying though it may be, there are things you really cant learn without a little help.

However, some stuff to learn on ur own before the lesson, to get ahead of the pack:

"Skating". Clip your front foot into its binding, and learn to kick yourself around with your back foot like you would on a skateboard. praktice on a flat area at first, then try skating up a tiny, gentle slope, and point the snowboard straight down the hill. Give yourself a little kick forward with your back foot to the bottom of the hill, then rest your foot on the snowboard, just before the back binding.

Then, try to turn as you go down the slope. Learn to do a "toeside" turn first, by gently leaning forward. When you have this down, do a "heelside" turn - the same thing but on your heels.

I don't know the instructors at Heavenly - so i can't help you there. However, If you discover that the lesson is a complete waste of time (i.e. skating around for 2 hours straight, not riding the lift on the first lesson), don't be afraid to ditch.

See if you can get hold of your own equipment cheaply on "www.craigslist.org" . It will make your day much more enjoyable, as resorts often rent miserably tuned boards with step in bindings - YUCK! you need strap in. Do make sure to get a relatively modern board - they have advanced enormously in the past 10 years. (3-4 seasons old is fine) . Complete outfits of this type can often be had for under 100.

Finally, get waterproof pants. You will be spending a lot of time on you *** as you learn, and you do not want your pants picking up snow and it melting.

have fun,

Joe

Snowboarind... freeriding, freestyle??

Joe_Dirt got it exactly right! Take a lesson. Seems dumb, but if you are alone that's the only way you're going to learn anything.

Definitly use strap bindings, not the crappy step in kind (similar to ski bindings).

Ummm...not much I can add to the previous answer. Have fun. Don't let pride get in the way of learning and having a great time!! Haha :-D

Snow in andorra at end of november?

Buy and use a helmet. Spend about 90 min. stretching before and after you are on the mountain. Have fun.

Who will beat Canada at the 2007 Ford World Curling Championship this week?

Heavenly has 3 Ski School locations: California Main Lodge; Gondola; Boulder

For a beginner snowboarder, there's no difference between the locations so most people choose a location based on convenience for where they're staying.

Take a lesson - Heavenly will give you a big discount on your lift ticket if you buy a lesson package (lesson, lift and rentals). No reservations are required for group lessons which are every day at 10:00am and 1:00pm for 3 hours.

Make sure you check in at least 60 minutes before the lesson starts to give yourself time to get your equipment fitted. Arrive even earlier at the Gondola Ski School to give yourself 20 minutes to ride to the top of the Gondola where the lessons meet.

Morning lessons are typically a little busier than afternoon lessons but the advantage of taking a morning lesson is that you can use your lift ticket and equipment in the afternoon to practise your new skills.

Which is the best ski resort in the world?

I have no advice for you apart from what the others have said. Although you have just brought back some fond memories. I learnt to snowboard in Tahoe about 10 years ago. It was fantastic. I hope you have a great time. The most important thing is not to give up. The first few days were hell - but after that its one of the best things you can do EVER.
Good luck & enjoy
