The answer depends if you are going to NorCal or SoCal. NorCal is far superior and less crowded. There are many great ski resorts up I-80 that offer everything from tubing to skiing to snowshoeing.

Mt. Shasta Ski Park in Mt. Shasta Ca. is really nice and great for the family. They have full rentals I'm just not sure about the snow mobiles? It's located on the Northern end of Cali near the Oregan border. Have a great time.
