go to kulu manali...Who's going to the world curling in grande prairie?
I did not know that one could snow ski in India. But I was curious with you question and checked it out on the web. This was the best site I had found: http://www.india-adventure-travel.com/wi...It sounds like fun! If you do go, I hope you have a great time!
How do the Olympians practice their air moves during the Summer?
The Kulu Valley is a loooong way by train from Delhi. It is possible to fly to some of the Northern State areas then take a shorter journey to Manali. The bus rides are very rough as this part of the Himalaya is certainly off any beaten 'track'.There is the Auli ski area, which is along a somewhat remote part of the 'outter' Himalya regions of Josimath. It is a long, bumpy and not-very-comfortable bus ride from Rishikesh. Don't let the distance fool you. It may be 200 - 300 km's on a map - the trip is along winding 'roads' <or trails> that hairpin & circle up some not so well guarded passes. The bus ride - with our any delay is a full 10+ hour trip. Look at a Lonely Planet or similiar guidebook to get more accurate info.
I think that the bus ride would far more 'exciting' then any skiing in this part of the world.
The ski experience, compaired to developed ski resorts and destinations in the western world is actually quite poor. The lifts are questionably safe, there is virtually no maintenance on the slopes/pistes and really no apres-ski/ restaurant or lounge experiences at the end of the day. Most locals simply cannot afford these experiences.
If there is any type of organised trips - try the Gulmarg or Kashmir regions. They are the very North West States that boarder with Pakistan. Up until recently - and still - each country has disputed the region and has terrific armies defending a large territory of land that is practically useless. This has put some restrictions on the area - and even the sking/ touring of the region. Google Kashmir or Gulmarg to get the story..
Gulmag has some terrific ski 'touring' along the area which also boasts the highest ropeway in the world. It tops out at almost 13000 feet ASL. The region takes approximately 2 days to get into, including a very no frills bus stop/overnight with very little then a tent to sleep in, during the summer. It is virtually impassable in the winter months. The only alternative is to travel by plane. There is restricted entry from Pakistan & NO entry from Tibet.. <or China which it sadly has been for a number of years>.
Keep in mind that there is really nothing of first aid or ambulance service should you get hurt in these areas. You can immagine the <non existant> avalnche control along these areas in the mountains too.
Click on the link I left.. theres travel info.. a few maps.. and more info on the Srinagar/ Gulmarg regions
