What should I look for in a boarding/skiing jacket/shell?

I'm about to buy a new jacket or shell for skiing and boarding and am finding there's a ton of different "features" in the jackets, half of which I know nothing about. What are things that are pretty crucial (I do both boarding and skiing) and some nice to have things (e.g., I know I want some kind of cord organizing loops for an mp3 player).

At what age can children start snowboarding?

A waterproof inner pocket will be good for the MP3 player. Most higher end jackets should have something like this by now. My HHansen jacket has one with a little mark saying its specifically for phones/gadgets.

Having a waistband that is elastic and snaps up is the best way to keep snow out of your jacket. I'm not talking about the 80s style jackets that came tight at the bottom, I'm just talking about an inner band that keeps snow from flying up into your jacket. When you look at a jacket you'll see what I'm talking about.

Another thing to keep you dry is the little sock things on the sleves of the jacket. There is usually room for your thumb and fingers to go through (like a glove) and they keep snow from going up your arms in case you loose a glove or have some seperation.

Who is a huge fan of curling and how much do you watch it or play curling?

wrist and waist gaters. I think they are the best inventions since sliced ham. I just bought a new coat and I made sure it had the wrist gaters so that I won't get snow down my gloves.

Also check the waterproof/breatability rating. I don't quite understand the rating myself, but I do know that the higher the number the better!
