The first sponsor of the Brier was the Macdonald Tobacco Company in 1927. The Brier came from a brand of tobacco that Macdonald Tobacco manufactured. A "brier" is brier is a small shrub whose roots are used to make tobacco pipes, and the word can also refer to such a pipe.
