Okay, it totally depends on the weather. If it is cold, you always go for a slimmer-fitting under layer, then a fleece, goose down or another thick, warm layer. Your last layer should be windproof, waterproof, and not nessessarily bulky. You can have more than one garment per layer. If it is warm (like it is at some of the resorts I've skiied at) go for an undershirt that is a good wicking material and then a lightweight semi-windproof coat. You can tell when a material is windproof by putting it up to your mouth, with your fingers on the other side. Blow hard, and if it is completely windproof, you won't be able to feel anything. That material will keep you warm and help the wind glide off you so that you can go faster. If you blow and your fingers start to feel the warmth from your breath or feel a slight breeze, the material is semi-windproof. If you can blow straight through it, it is not windproof and never wear materials like that on a cold day of skiing as your outer layer. Try to stay away from the bulk, because it is difficult to ski and you catch a lot of wind.
