What's a good ski resort in Lake Tahoe for a first time experience?

For my b-day, my best friend, my mom, and I are going to Lake Tahoe to ski! Where's a great place for beginners? Also where's a good place to stay thats affordable because we want to make it a overnight trip? Please be specific!!

Am I a slow learner?

I second Heavenly. That is an awesome, beautiful, fun resort. We are always on a budge too. I'd suggest using a business search map to find local hotels about 20 mins from the slope. Yeah, it's a 20 min drive, but that's how you find the best deals on overnight stays.

Or, stay closer in using the Heavenly resort finder from $95/night...

I like Heavenly...I'm not a beginner, but it's beginner-friendly.
been there 3 times.

As far as affordable places, I'd say stay in a casino hotel (they offer free shuttles to the resorts)...and you can get good deals on overnight rates.

What are the differences between ski poles and snowshoe poles?

I like Northstar at Tahoe. It's a good family-oriented place with lost of differing terrain.

Alpine Meadows is excellent.

Squaw Valley is overrated.

Donner ski Ranch is very small but also very inexpensive. A few years back you could still get lift tix for like $20.

Who is going to win the Stanley Cup?

I recommend Sugar Bowl at Soda Springs (see link #1) because it is a great place for beginners, it's close to Hwy. 80 and they have a new day lodge. They've got a good beginners package including rentals and a lesson with fantastic instructors (my son has skied on the Ski Team there for several years because of the great staff). Go to the Judah entrance (follow signs) and you will be directed to the one-stop area for rentals, tix & lessons.

As for affordable places to stay -- it's the high season -- but we've found good rates and clean (small) rooms at the Rainbow Lodge (see link #2) -- its rustic (feels like a European ski lodge and has a great restaurant) -- if you prefer a more generic motel there is the Holiday Inn in Truckee (see link #3) about 8 miles away. Have Fun and Happy B-Day!
