Anyone like Torville and Dean?
Sorry have to correct this --- Johnny Weir did NOT start skating when he was 13, he was 12. I skated with him when I was 13 at the University of Delaware and I'm 24 now. He was skating with Pamela Duane Gregory at the time, and he was the tiniest little boy you would have ever seen. He looked like he was 7 or 8.As far as 14 being too old to start skating, it's not too late. But you do need to look at your limitations. If you are hoping to become a coach or skate in ice shows, then 14 is definately not too late. If you are looking to win a regional, sectional, or national competition, then possibly. It all depends on how naturally skating comes to you, if you are able to get jumps easily, etc... For boys its a bit different around this age, generally girls are already starting to develop womanly characteristics and may have more problems finding their center. Even girls who have been skating for some time have difficulty with jumps and spins around this age as they start to develop.
You'll immediately start competing against other skaters your age (if you choose to compete). Just be aware that your age may limit you in what competitions you can enter. Additionally, realize that your body may be something to overcome. (Not trying to insinuate any bad physique, just a lack of muscle training, different center of gravity). It's just like little kids are generally not afraid of trying new things. They have less far to fall. I'm assuming that since you are interested in pairs, that you must be a pretty small girl, but you will need to do extensive weight training to build up your strength to be able to do certain manuevers. Additionally, ballet classes will be a must since you will be a bit behind.
Also skating is very expensive. Dresses, costumes, skates, blades, coaches, ice time, commute time (gas $), competition fees, ballet classes, etc. It adds up. When I stopped skating, I was spending easily $12,000 a year on skating expenses, sometimes more.
Skating is tons of fun, is a great form of exercise, and really allows a person to show off their strength and beauty in one sport. I'd really encourage you to give figure skating a try. It will be lots of hard work, I can assure you, but it can be just as much fun. Set reasonable expectations for yourself, and I'm sure you will enjoy it!
Best of Luck!
Do you like curling or does it bore u?
If all you want to do is compete in local competitions then 14 is not too late to start. There are competitions out there for a variety of levels and abilities. On a side note, you may want to consider using proper English when you post questions as your trying to be cool "short-hand" is difficult to read and makes you sound like a moron. I'm 14 too and you don't see me posting responses using "words" like wot, wud, and sk8in. If you want people to take you seriously, then take this seriously.
Why can't I sign into US Figure Skating?
My god I'd forgotton how bitchy 14 year olds could be. Don't worry about your shorthand if it makes you type quicker it doesn't matter and I think some people here are taking sports1234.com a little too seriously. Anyway in response to your question you're not too old to start, just work hard keep focussed. I have a friend who does shows and stuff who didn't start until she was 15. She did disney on ice in Florida. O.K. maybe not what you're looking for but it was amazing fun. What sort of figure skates do you recommend?
It's a great age to start skating. You may not be an Olympic skater, but you will be able to do other competitions and eventually be able to coach other skaters if you would like. I think you should go ahead and start skating, and have fun!I'm super tall, and it is so hard for me to find skating dresses that fit. Any ideas?
It's not too late.I know people who have started skating in their 20s.
Snowboard Question: Ride Women's Grace Board?
Nope, 14's not too late at all. You should go ahead and sign up for lessons and enjoy yourself while you learn to skate. Do the best you can and see how far you can get with your lessons.14's actually a little EARLY to worry about turning professional, but if you find you're still hoping for it, there's no reason you can't become a professional. NISA has a certification program for instructors/coaches.
In terms of skating shows, check out their websites for requirements and audition information. You'll see that many of the smaller shows need skaters who aren't Olympic champions.
Good luck.
It's not to late. I'm 16 and started a year ago and am already one-third of the way through the ISI Levels.
So, what can kind of work out routine do you have?
I started ice skating just about the same age as you and i was one of the younger students in my club. you are definitely not to old to become a professional skaterWhat is country that have win the first rank in medals table in the last winter Olympics 2006?
Go for it!To become an olympic skater you will need to dedicate a lot of time to the sport and you will only make it if you are passionate and focussed.
My coach always told me to shoot for the moon and you might just reach the stars. In other words if you aim for the olympics you might make nationals!
If you are sure this is something you want to pursue as a career fitness is essential. Try street dance classes, they are great fun, improve your dance skills which are essential for figure skating and they keep you really fit, you could also try ballet, which improves your balance, grace and flexibility. I ballet dance twice a week and I find that it has helped my posture and my spins are a lot nicer now! Even more importantly than that is to eat well. DO NOT diet, DO NOT live off lettuce, and DO NOT compare yourself to other people. You can eat what you want to a certain degree and still be in perfect shape. You are only young, eating well is important, but having what you want is just as important!
I also find having a role model who you model yourself on is a great way to improve performance once you get into it. Go onto YouTube and type in Sasha Cohen and watch some of the montages and videos on there. You can also have a look at Michelle Kwan and the top british pair Sinead and John Kerr.
Whatever else you decide to do within the sport HAVE FUN! If you don't it will become a chore and you will never make it.
Good luck sweetheart, and I hope to see you in the winter olympics in another few years or so!
What is a better ski resort for 1st time skiiers?Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead or Mammoth?
Here is my story, hopefully it will give you confidence to give it a shot. I was 16 when I started figure skating. I have a backround in dance and gymnastics so some things like jumping came easy for me. But not everything, some turns and especially endurance were very difficult. But I pressed on and practiced practically every day for hours. I am now a senior level skater, landing doubles and tripples and have been teaching figure skating for 6 years! Nothing is impossible, you just have to practice! (a lot:))Which brands are good for snowboards?
This may sound cliche, but you're never too old to skate. I know some people who are 50 and they just started skating! I stated skating when I was 3, but that's a tad too early. Anyways, if you try hard and never give up you'll make it in the long run no mattar how hard it takes. Please use some proper grammar and spelling when you ask questions it's hard to understand.
well johnny weir started when he was 13. and look at him now, 3 time US champ
What kind of clothes should i wear to go snowboarding?!?
I am 14 also. I am almost in frrestyle 1. You need to do lessons first. No offence, but you need to be extremly wealthy for this sport. I am going to have to quit soon because my instructor is recomending a private coach. Not to mention the cost of aktes, costumes, cometion fees.Which Croatian athlete was declared by Euro sport as the best sport person in the world?
Okay im not going to say " go for it " You can do it if you put your mind to it" crap. I am going to say devote a lot of time to it. I am . take ballet, you use lots of principles of ballet in figure skating. I am. And Skate at least twice a week for 45 min..Okay. do that.
A few years back dual slalom and dual GS was supposed to come into ski racing why hasn't it?
no its nvr to late i started when i turned 13 and in 4 months i was thru basic 6 it would be easier to do pairs but its hard to find a partner at this ageFor snowboarding goggles when it says dual lense do that mean they are mirrow lenses?
Unfortunately it is too late for you. Most professional skaters learned to skate at a very early age. Both of my children were taking skating lessons at age four. Most professionals got their start competing within various age groups and culminating in trying out for the Olympics as soon as they become teenagers. If they do well enough to represent their country then they might go on to skate professionally.Snowboarding: do i have an advantage?

Nope. I am fourteen, and I live in a desert, but I want to become one too! I asked a question a while ago, and I got some really good tips. I am doing pushups and crunches, and I am trying to eat healthy. I do not have a rink, so I plan on going to a boarding school that is near one. You can do it as long as you strive for it.
Keep it as your ultimate goal, and start taking baby steps to complete it. ppl told me it was too l8 to get to the Olympics, but I am just ignoring them. I know if I put in enough effort, there is still a chance, same for you! Eat healthy, work out, and really enjoy every minute of it. Make sure you get a coach who supports you, and if your parents want to help, letem! (I haven't told my parents yet- they do not like fs at all) Keep practicing the jumps at home, maybe on wooden flooring or tile. I looke like an idiot but it sure helps. I also watch clips from YouTube and I try to imitate them! GOOD LUCK! oh ya...STAY FOCUSED AND DO NOT GIVE UP
alrighty here is another one from a thirteen year old. btw i serously mean every word i write in these answers.

no way. ur thirteen. im fourteen and ive got dreams of hitting the olympics too. dont let anyone bring u down...itll just become an obstacle in ur way.
1st. let ur parents know. maybe they can help...drop u off to the rink, pay the bills, find a coach, etc. if they dont wanna help...dont panic. u might have to put in some extra hard work. but itll make u feel even better once u hit the podium
2nd. find a rink and a coach. finding the coach is extremly important because they are going to be ur mentor, teacher, and parent. so take a while finding one.
3rd. practice practice practice. nothing comes without hard work. i dont have a rink nearby so i have to imgaine everything i do. idance everywhere, and i try to floor all my jumps. sounds phony but cuz its the only thing i can do, all i can do is thinking about reaching my dream. and this is the only way ican so far. workout in the gym, and do situps and pushups everynight.
4th. dont lose ur inspiration. sometimes i think "what do i have going for me" I have no rink, in the middle of the desert, im going off to boarding school, and my parents arent fans of the sport. but then i realize how fortunate i am, and to keep me bouncing again i watch 1998 Olympic Tara Lipinskis performance from the long. its just...beautiful. and its a perfect example of why u are using ur efforts.
dont give up. use ur oppurtunity while u can. hopefully ill be meeting u in the olympics.
anywys good luck with ur endevour. u can email me at hayahusain92@yahoo.com and id be happy to help u out.
.
so ive given u as much inspiration as i could possibly give u. now its up to u to take ur dream. dont be afraid, just do it. because u know u wont regret it later. :)
Whats a good website to buy on sale snowboarding boots?
It's definately not too late to start skating. But, if you want to start competing, make sure to get a good coach and have your mind set on it. You have to work hard and be totally devoted to it. Look at Johnny Weir, he was the National Senior level silver medalist this year and gold medalist last year and he started skating when he was 12 years old! Good luck and have fun!:)Can you ski/snowboard in Utah (Salt lake city area) during the 3rd week of March?
No, it's not too late. Look around at some of the champions and you'll see that they started when they were teens. Perhaps the greatest case in point is the Protopopovs, an amazing pairs team from Russia. Ludmilla began skating when she was 16 and they went on to win the Olympic gold twice! The Protopopovs are now in their seventies and they still skate daily, having had a wonderful professional skating career. They're living proof that you don't need to start as a young child to become a wonderful skater and have a successful skating career.More Questions & Answers...
