I am thinking of doing one but I am worried about the cost as I would prefer not to work. Any recommendations about where to go and any ideas on the cost/availability of accommodation?

Well, Tahoe has some pretty awesome snow. However, the cost is maybe not so great for you, but there are many locations round Tahoe. You may want to go there and ask more experienced persons on this.
I am a skier in Michigan, any suggestions of where I should go?
There are many good places to ski in California such as Kirkwood, Mammoth, Bear Valley, Northstar, Mt Shasta, Dodge Ridge, Sierra Summitt, Squaw Valley etc. Im not too sure what the accomodation costs are likely to be though probably quite a bit. So unless you have alot of money to spend you would probably be better off working a bit to help with costs.
