Snowboarding weight on front foot or back foot?


I've been tolding so many different things. Should most your weight be on your front foot or on your back foot when you are snowboarding? Thanks!

Sooo many bad answers here. The only time you would ever put your weight on your back foot is in powder, that's it. And even in powder, once I'm up to speed I'll even my weight out between both feet for better control.

In absolutely every other condition you want most, if not all, of your weight forward. The nose of your board is where all your control comes from. Ever catch an edge on your tail? Nope, that's because the nose of your board is the first thing to contact the riding surface. In order to maintain control you need to be where all the action is, the front of your board. If you don't believe this, next time you are skating to the chair take your front foot out instead of your back foot and see what happens.

Anyone who is riding on a groomed run with their weight back isn't carving because they can't carve doing this.

So, the answer is: Keep most of your weight forward while snowboarding. In powder, ride with just enough weight in the back to keep the nose up.

Honestly for me, I would say both...dependant on the terrain. Some terrain, for example, pow, requires a back lean to keep your nose up. Other terrain, such as the ice coast, requires a bit more weight up front for stability.

In the end its comes down to personal preference. Our bodies are all different and their going to do what works best for it...whether we like it or not.

The main reason is better control. If you are going down hill, your board will have better contact if you put weight on your front foot. Your weight should be about 60% on the front, and 40% in the back.

Martoq nailed it. It depends on the terrain. Even more importantly, you should set you're stance up accordingly. If you're big mountain riding, you need to shift your stance to the back of the board, for stability at higher speeds and control in deeper pow. If you're a park junkie, you want you to set it right in the middle, so if you're taking off or landing switch-stance you have a more even landing.
