Backcountry skiing is downhill skiing, but not at a resort. You use the same type of skis though. And you should have GPS and a beacon and shovels and be avalanche certified.Cross country skiing is on a flat trail and the type of skis are different than downhill skis.

My yamaha bravo snowmobile won't stay running?
Backcountry skiing is done out of ski area boundaries. You have to be more experienced and be able to tell where not to go(eg. loose snow sets off an avalanche). People do it to get fresh powder and go where other people haven't. It can also be teamed up with heliskiing, with the helicopter taking you into the backcountry. What is Hannah Teter's mailing address for fan mail?
Backcountry skiing is skiing "wild snow", that is, outside the controlled boundaries of a ski resort. Equipment to access the back-country can be telemark (free-heel binding), randonee (aka alpine touring, heel release to climb and locks down to ski down), split boarding (a snowboard that separates into 2 pieces and can be used like cross-country skis for the uphill section) or simply via snowshoes with your snowboard on your pack. There are a number of dangers inherent to backcountry skiing, not the least of which is avalanches. There are also crevasses, tree wells, cliffs, rocks, trees, the weather and the fact that you are on your own. As mentioned above, equipment and knowledge beyond ski skills are needed. Specifically, avalanche rescue gear - a transceiver (sends an electronic signal that allows other transceivers to generally locate you if you're buried by an avalanche), a probe (to locate the exact postion of buried friend) and a shovel (to dig you out). EMT/WFR skills are also nice.
