What is the difference beteeen downhill and outside ski?

Answers:

How are ski slopes prepared for contests? (how come there is so much ice on contest slopes?)?

Two terms for the same thing. The downhill ski becomes the inside ski as soon as you start the next turn making your other ski the outside ski which as the turn completes becomes your downhill ski.

Use to hear downhill ski all the time but now we speak in terms of inside/outside more.

Question bout Snowboarding Gear!! Im a NoOb?

Downhill ski is an old term used in teaching, for the ski that is farther down the hill. Unfortunately during a turn, this becomes confusing, because between the time you start and finish a turn, the downhill ski becomes the uphill ski! Then instructors would use the terms 'old downhill' and 'new downhill' ski which would make it more confusing.

The new terminology is better -- inside and outside ski. The improvement comes from consistency, because the outside ski remains the outside ski during the whole turn. During a turn to the left, your outside ski is the right ski. During a turn to the right, your outside ski is the left ski. So an instructor can say 'place more weight on your outside ski' and it will make a lot more sense.
