Where did the term "hammer" come from in the game of curling?

Answers:

Is this music good?

I think with the Scottish backgrounds of the game of curling, and the power of the hammer, it might have just been named it because of its power. As you know, hammer means last rock and that is pretty powerful. I don't know..just my guess!!

Is burton really the best?

Hammer is a very old word which does in fact come from Old Norse. It refers to the ancient word for a cliff face, which is where stones were obtained for the making of, you guessed it, hammers.
