Where is a good place in the U.S. for beginner mountaineering, ice climbing?

I was going to try a Mount McKinley mountaineering school but was told that was way out of my league to climb something that high. Does anyone know a good place to go that preferably teaches you or guides you up the mountain. I am talking full-blown ice climbing with crampons and ice-picks. I was thinking somewhere near the washington-california-oregon-c... area. Basically the rockies.
