Does anyone have any good tips for just learning the camel ( figure skating spin ) ?

Have your coach hold you in a spiral position...then rotate you around so you can feel the spin in its proper position.
Also work on doing a camel spin from a stand still, do a 3 turn into it and pull your arms around into the direction you are turning. Once you feel the rotation you should be able to get use to spinning in a spiral position.
One more thing...while you are spinning...arch your back and keep your head up...this will help you hold your balance.

Practice off ice, especially in front of a mirror so you can get a physical (kinesetic) feeling of what it is SUPPOSED to feel like. Leg up and straight, parallel, then try it on the ice. The practice on ice is going to help you learn how to get into that position and hold it.

How do i prevent myself from falling when im snowboarding?

make sure you do it at home, i practice mine in the kitchen. I place a mirror infront of me, so I can see what I am doing, and how my postioning is. It is good to take ballet, and gymnastics to increase flexibility and strength. Toning the bum and leg muscles really helps.

Good luck :)

The only thing you need to understand about a camel - assuming you can already do a scratch spin - is that your pelvic alignment to the ice surface is a major factor in balancing your weight and using the force of your upper and lower body weight to help you maintain the rotation speed.
Let me illistrate, when you are standing your pelvic is tilted upright to align your spine, when you perform a 'flat back' stretch, naturally you let the hips tip forward almost 90 degrees which causes a stretch in your ham-string as well...still with me?..Now, to balance the weight of your leg in the spiral position while spinning you need to put weight opposite the leg in the circle being created by centrifigal force.that counter balance will be your upper body. Think of a dog chasing his tale to help stop your self from 'openning' up against the spin, it's important to feel as though you are 'wiping off a table'/both shoulders are equal distance from the ice surface while spinning.
Okay, I've rambled quite a bit but I hope it helps you out!

How long does it really take you to be an averaged skate boarder?

go into it by whipping you arm to get speed with your back low, arched, head up, bent knee. as your turning you should rise up on knee, keep both knees straight and keep arching your back and head up. you should do three rotations minimum and come out strong. it may seem like a lot but this is how i perfected mine.
just keep practicing!! and have fun.

Whats better snowbording or sking?

All you have to do to start to learn it, just as I am, is start in a t- position, and push with your skating leg. Then make yourself rotate, and put your leg up slowly.
