How do you spin and not get dizzy?
If you have never waxed your skis, you should have them stone ground first. This is not too expensive, and most ski shops can do it. Your ski bases will probably not absorb any wax if they have not been waxed in a long time, because the pores in the bases of your skis will have sealed. Stonegrinding will re-open the pores, and it will also smooth out any scratches in your bases. You also need to keep a layer of wax (don't scrape it off) on your skis in the off season. Waxing your skis will make them faster, if you use the correct wax for the conditions. However, if you are a downhill skier who doesn't plan on doing any racing, you don't really need to bother with waxing unless you have really nice skis. Good ski waxing equipment can get expensive. If you are a nordic skier, you should always wax your skis, because you can ruin the bases if you let them oxidize too much.Get them waxed if you're unifamilar with it. Its usually only about $10.

Waxing your skis will make them faster. But, before you do that, make sure you're skilled enough to handle the extra speed on some slippery slopes. Speed is nothing without control.I threw my mountain high lift ticket in the laundry. Is it still good?
You can get rub on wax for a quick fix if its not too bad or you can get them hot waxed with an iron at most ski stores. I recommend toko rub on wax or dakine gel wax its easy to do just rub and wax on wax off. How's the skiing at Sugar Bush?
If the bottoms of your skis and the edges are rough, they won't go as fast. A ski tune will renew the edges and base to almost like new quality. This is the first step if your skis are in rough shape. Once they have been tuned, the other answerers are correct, wax will eke the last little bit of speed out of them. You can get a tune done at most ski/snowboard shops for around $35 bucks. (No need to get a performance tune if you aren't a downhill racer). I think that most people that care about waxing do it themselves. I ski about 25 days a year and I get a tune done once a season at the beginning of the season at my local Ski Market. I don't bother to wax my skis because it's kind of a pain and I don't see it as all that necessary. Maybe I should, but I don't.Enjoy!
Ski Shops will wax skis in about a week for $20-$30. This is called a tune up, they will sand down the old wax, apply new wax to bases and buff, the edges will be run across a stone made for shapening skis edges. Your skis will ride a lot better after this, it is recommended you do this about every 8-10 days of skiing.
Mine are in the shop right now and with P-Tex repair for some small marks in the base, Atlanta Ski and Snowboard is charging me $29.95, I am off to Steamboat Feb 10th.

Waxing makes a ridiculous amount of difference in ski speed. I was out in Colorado in December for a week and in the middle I had my skis waxed. It was like turbo speed I * you not. Blasted by the other people I was skiing with especially on the flat runoffs by the chairlifts (always in control of course!).There are two types of waxings that I know of, the hot wax professional job and the rub on wax that you can do yourself. But the wipe on stuff will come off after a few runs -- good for racers who'll only make a few runs, perhaps, but not for your day.
Take them into a shop at the end of the day and have them professionally tuned or at least waxed. The shop will have some packages: Get the tuning/waxing one (edges deburred (taking out the rough edges) and sharpened. It's nice to have nice newly sharped edges with all that slick speed!
There are many types of wax, for example they have difference waxes for different temperatures. Your shop tuner will recommend one for you, probably without you even asking.
