This answer is one of the easiest to answer. Orton is 10 times the performer than Batista.He has a much better ring presense, is a way better in ring worker, is alot better on the mic, gets over better in his gimmick(I mean, look in here alone. People are hating on his performance IN the ring based on his OUT of ring life, and that is getting heat), and even really looks better overal as a wrestler.
He has the arrogence that people hate in a heel, he is very believeable in his "legand Killer" gimmick, he CAN(When he wants) work great matches with anyone and is able to tell a story in the ring(something I think is VERY much missing in today's wrestling business) can work a crowd like a 20 year veteran.
Not to mention he is young, and unlike someone else suggested, Batista is in his 40's, so he is NOT young.
BUT, when it all comes down to it, Vince is, and has always been, about big, and/or muscular guys, and has always thought of that as more important than in ring abilities(IE, Undertaker, Kane, Big Show, Hogan, Yokozuna, Umaga, Sid, etc) and that is porbably the main reason Orton was passed over for Batista.
Personal issues aside out of the Ring, Orton is a better all around performer than Batista.

Performer Orton. He is youger has more in ring ability and can sell any move. But Its Batista right now cause he is not acting childish and getting sent home for causing damage or being suspended for acting like an @$$.If he can get past all of that he could be the guy to carry WWE. well the way it has panned out Batista. Orton is always in trouble. unless he shapes up his behavior he will never be back to main even statusyes I did know and Triple H has taste! as much as Batista annoys me at least he doesn't have any major drug problem unlike stinky pants Orton!

Well, actually this is a tied debate. Both have their strengths and flaws -- and both being younger talent they are the lifeblood of the WWE in years to come. Both can put on decent face/heel acts, and have respective styles (as someone else also pointed out). Technical wrestling is on a decline in the WWE -- Orton has the skill for it.What's going to happen when Taker/Kane bow out or move onto something else? We have Khali and Bigshow.. WAKE ME UP WHEN IT'S OVER. They need Batista as a place holder in the power / big man field.
