Are you a younger, newer fan? That might explain the question, since I myself asked the same thing when I was much younger.
Anyway, as far as the storylines, match outcomes, and the personalities of the characters, yeah, it's about 99% fake on that end. Of course, things can change in an instant, with accidents and whatnot, but since that normally doesn't happen, count on the stories to be totally fake.
As far as the wrestling itself is concerned, it is, to a point, real. It's just that those performers in the ring train for a long time, at schools that are located all across the country, as well as at smaller, independent wrestling promotions, including the WWE's chosen developmental territories, like Ohio Valley Wrestling in Louisville, KY, in order to hone their initial skills, and to learn how to give and receive the kind of punishment their bodies no doubt take. They learn how to make it look real, basically, including how to take the blow of a bodyslam, or how to throw a punch and where it needs to land, etc. And yes, accidents can happen, and can make the sport very dangerous, no matter what the script says. That's why they always tell you to NEVER TRY THIS AT HOME, because it's true. Hope this helps you, and whatever it is you're watching, just enjoy it for the entertainment it is, and don't worry about the "fakeness" of it all.

i think its a little of both. ever watch the documentary with mankind, the rock, and jake the snake in it? watch it and you will know the truth. wrestlers know how to fall and not hurt themselves. story lines are made up months in advance. the action and wrestling is real.
